Manglik Dosha: Meaning, Exceptions and Myths
Manglik dosha is a traditional flag in kundli matching. It is said to arise when Mars sits in certain houses of a birth chart. It is not part of the 36 point Guna Milan total, and it says nothing certain about a marriage. This page explains the rule, the exceptions traditions list, and the myths to set aside.
First, a plain fact about this site: the free matching tool here does not check Manglik yet. The result shows Manglik as coming soon. Do not treat any score from this tool as a Manglik verdict, and do not describe a Manglik check here as live, because it is not.
The traditional rule
Tradition holds that a person is called Manglik when Mars is placed in houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12 counted from the Moon sign. Each of those houses relates in tradition to a part of married life, which is why those placements drew attention in the first place.
| House from the Moon sign | Area it relates to in tradition |
|---|---|
| 1st | Nature of the person and general approach to life |
| 2nd | Family life and speech |
| 4th | Home comfort and peace of mind |
| 7th | Partnership and marriage itself |
| 8th | Longevity of the bond, in traditional terms |
| 12th | Expenses, rest and private life |
There is an honest complication here. Some traditions count these houses from the ascendant instead of from the Moon sign. That is why two people can get different answers for the same chart: one reading flags Manglik, the other does not. Neither reading is the only one in tradition. Before worrying about a flag, it is worth asking which counting method was used.
Why Manglik sits outside the 36 points
Guna Milan compares the Moon sign and the nakshatra of two people across eight kootas. Manglik looks at something else entirely: the placement of Mars in one chart at a time. A high guna score therefore says nothing about Manglik, and a Manglik flag never changes the guna total in either direction. The 36 guna chart shows the full scoring picture, and Manglik appears nowhere in it, because it belongs to a separate check.
This separation is the reason a match report can look confusing at first. A couple can score 30 out of 36 and still carry a Manglik flag, or score 20 with no Manglik flag at all. Both readings can be true at once, because they measure different things.
Exceptions traditions list
Tradition does not treat every Mars placement above as a final flag. Some traditions list conditions under which the dosh is considered cancelled or softened. These conditions differ by region and by scholar, and they should be checked rather than assumed.
- Some traditions list Mars in its own sign as an exception, on the reasoning that Mars is strong and settled there rather than disruptive.
- Some traditions list a benefic aspect on Mars as an exception, meaning a well placed Jupiter or a similar influence is said to soften the placement.
- Some traditions list the pairing of two Manglik partners as an exception, on the reasoning that the same flag on both sides balances the reading.
- Some people believe the effects linked with Mars soften with age, and the age of 28 is often quoted in casual talk. Treat this as a belief some people hold, not as a rule all traditions accept.
The practical point is simple. A Manglik label on a basic report is not the end of the question. The exceptions, the counting method, and the rest of the chart all need a look before anyone draws a conclusion.
Myths to set aside
A Manglik person must only marry a Manglik, or the spouse will die
This is the most frightening claim around Manglik, and it is not a fact. Nothing in a chart predicts the death of a spouse. The pairing of two Manglik partners is listed by some traditions as one exception among others. It was never a compulsion, and it must never be used to frighten a family into a decision.
Manglik dosh vanishes at 28
Some people hold this belief, and others do not. No tradition wide rule fixes an age at which a placement stops mattering, and this site does not present the age of 28 as a cutoff. If someone quotes an age as a certainty, ask which tradition they are following.
Manglik means a bad temper or a bad spouse
Mars in tradition stands for drive, energy and a strong will. Those qualities can make a person direct and impatient, and they can also make a person brave and determined. A Mars placement does not judge character, and it does not make anyone a bad partner.
A single Manglik flag ends a proposal
One flag never decides a marriage. A flag should lead to questions about the counting method and the exceptions, and then to a family discussion. No score and no flag should end, cancel, or delay a marriage on its own.
What to do if a chart shows Manglik
- Ask which counting method was used, from the Moon sign or from the ascendant, since the answer can change with the method.
- Check whether any traditional exception applies to the chart.
- Read the full match alongside the flag, including the guna breakdown from the free matching tool.
- Decide as a family, with time and without pressure. The decision belongs to the couple and their families, not to a single flag.
If personal worries remain after that, you may optionally speak with a live expert through the separate service at psychicslove.org, which is an optional service for adults aged 18 and over offering guidance, not a guarantee. There is no urgency in that choice, and it changes nothing about the chart itself.
Frequently asked questions
Am I Manglik if Mars is in the 12th house from the Moon?
By the Moon sign rule, that placement is flagged, subject to the exceptions above. By an ascendant based reading, the answer may differ. The counting method matters, so confirm it before concluding anything.
Does Manglik affect the 36 point score?
No. Manglik is checked separately from Guna Milan and never changes the guna total.
Should we reject a match only for Manglik?
No. A single flag should never end a proposal on its own. Check the method, check the exceptions, read the full match, and decide as a family.
Does this site check Manglik for me?
Not yet. The free tool does not include a Manglik check, and the result shows it as coming soon. This page explains the traditional rule so you can understand a flag you may have seen elsewhere.
