Varna Koota in Kundli Matching

Varna is the first koota in kundli matching, worth 1 point out of 36. It compares the temperament group that tradition assigns to each person’s Moon sign. The rule is simple. When the boy’s group rank is equal to or higher than the girl’s, the pair scores 1. When the boy’s rank is lower, the pair scores 0. Because it carries only 1 point, varna can describe a difference in outlook without deciding the match on its own.

One point needs stating plainly before anything else. Varna in this system is a traditional label for temperament, worked out from the Moon sign. It is not a ranking of any person, caste, community, or religion, and it says nothing about anyone’s worth, job, or character. Anyone reading it as a judgment of people is misreading it.

What Varna Compares

Tradition sorts the 12 Moon signs into four varna groups. Each group stands for a broad way of approaching life: reflection and learning, action and protection, practical work and resources, or cooperation and service. The match compares the two groups, not the two people as a whole. Two people in the same group are read as sharing a similar outlook. Two people in different groups are read as bringing different outlooks to the same household, which can complement each other or create friction, depending on everything else in the chart.

Varna Groups and Moon Signs

The table below gives the four groups, their scoring ranks, and the Moon signs in each. The numbers 4 to 1 are scoring ranks inside this old system. They are not a ladder of human value.

RankGroupMoon signsTraditional association
4BrahminKarka, Vrishchika, MeenaReflection, learning, spiritual inclination
3KshatriyaMesha, Simha, DhanusAction, courage, protection
2VaishyaVrishabha, Kanya, MakaraPractical work, resources, management
1ShudraMithuna, Tula, KumbhaCooperation, service, skill in work

Find each person’s Moon sign first, then read across to the group and rank. The Moon sign comes from the Moon’s position at birth, not from the Sun sign used in newspaper columns. The free tool on the homepage works it out from the date, time, and place of birth.

How the Varna Score Is Counted

Take the boy’s rank and the girl’s rank from the table above. If the boy’s rank is equal to or higher than the girl’s, varna scores 1. If the boy’s rank is lower, varna scores 0. There is no middle score. Same group always scores 1, since the ranks are equal.

Illustration only, not a real couple. Suppose Sana’s Moon sign is Karka, which puts her in the Brahmin group with rank 4. Suppose Kabir’s Moon sign is Simha, which puts him in the Kshatriya group with rank 3. The boy’s rank of 3 is lower than the girl’s rank of 4, so this pair scores 0 on varna. That zero moves their total by just 1 point, because varna is the lightest koota in the 36 guna chart. It does not cancel the other seven kootas.

What a Varna Score Means

A score of 1 means the two temperament groups line up in the way tradition favours, with the boy’s rank equal to or above the girl’s. In plain terms, it suggests the two outlooks sit comfortably side by side. A score of 0 means the ranks fall the other way round. Tradition reads that as a difference in outlook that may need more patience and conversation, especially around values and daily priorities. It is not a verdict on the relationship, and it is certainly not a reason on its own to end a match. Families weigh it alongside Vashya, Tara, and the heavier kootas that follow.

Because varna is worth only 1 point, it is also the easiest koota to overread. A zero here sometimes worries families far more than it should. Keep the scale in mind. One point out of 36 cannot carry a marriage decision, and a full point here cannot rescue a total that is weak everywhere else.

Common Mix Ups

  • Varna and caste. Varna in matching is worked out from the Moon sign. It has no connection with anyone’s family, community, or social standing, and it must never be used to judge them.
  • Varna and personality. The group describes one narrow traditional reading of temperament. It does not describe the whole person, and two people in the same group can still differ greatly.
  • A zero and a failed match. A zero on varna costs 1 point. The match still has 35 other points to gain, and the decision rests with the couple and their family, not with this single point.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many points is varna worth?

Varna is worth 1 point out of 36, the smallest weight in the Ashtakoot system.

Does a varna mismatch block a marriage?

No. A mismatch scores 0 on this one koota and nothing more. It does not block a marriage, and it should never be treated as a reason to end a match on its own.

Is varna about caste?

No. In kundli matching, varna is a traditional temperament group derived from the Moon sign. It is not about caste, community, or religion, and it must not be used to rank or judge any person.

Where can I check my varna score?

The free tool on the homepage shows the varna score inside the full koota breakdown. You only need the birth details of both people.
